A router moves traffic—receiving and directing data packets on both your internal network and out to the larger internet. Each local network, such as your home or office, needs a router to communicate with other networks.
Maybe you’re thinking “But wait, why doesn’t the ONT just do all that?”
The honest answer? It could. Some ONTs act as both router and modem - but we’re not a one-size-fits-all kind of ISP. Businesses with 10 users have very different needs than businesses with 100+ users, so it’s important to provide a setup that can flex for different connections.
Choosing the router that’s right for your office begins with some reflection on the way your business operates and answering the following questions:
How much throughput will your internal network need? How much data is going back and forth between devices in your office?
How large is your space + number of users/devices? If your office layout is on the sprawling side, you may want to design a separate wireless network using access points to fortify the wifi for users in different parts of the space.
